With the state recently urging residents recognize the s of teen dating violence during an awareness month, local Blue Water Area advocates want teenagers to know that help is available if they need it.

Blue Water Safe Horizons domestic violence counselor Meliha McCue said teen dating abuse can take a similar form as abuse in adult relationships. She said controlling or manipulative behavior are a common warning .

One of the first steps for a teenager who thinks they may be in an abusive relationship is to confide in a trusted adult, McCue said. This might be a parent but could be a school counselor, family member or other trustworthy individual, she said. McCue said an abuser may try and exploit the distance between their partner and the trusted adult in their life, seeking to isolate them. Yale Public Schools social worker Julie Jowett-Lee said said the district includes information about healthy dating as part of its health education program.
Students and parents are informed of some of the warning s of abuse and what to do if they experience them, Jowett-Lee said.

Jowett-Lee said relationships where one partner conducts themselves in a controlling, overly hostile or isolating manner are unhealthy. She said an abuser may want to restrict their partner's group of friends or intimidate them. The school also works to teach students about qualities of healthy relationships, Jowett-Lee said.

Students are told that two partners in a relationship should support each other's individuality and should be able to resolve disagreements in a way that is respectful to both parties. Jowett-Lee added that the school is obliged to contact a student's parents if the student reports experiencing physical or sexual violence.
